The Skin Care Skinny on Combating Signs of Aging

The sun is a leading contributor to the early aging of your skin. And anti-aging cosmetic treatments are wildly popular with both men and women. You would almost have to be living under a rock (literally!) to be unaware of the importance of protecting your skin, but for many of us, sunscreen and cover-ups are the start and end of skin protection. If you want to avoid hyperpigmentation spots, fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging, you’ll have to do a lot more than sunscreen and cover-ups! You may not think of a plastic surgeon when you think of non-surgical skin treatments, but the truth is that no one is better at analyzing your skin and determining what regimen and treatments will prevent signs of age or restore a youthful appearance. At Pinsky Plastic Surgery, we understand the importance of beautiful, youthful skin and we offer these tips for protecting your skin from unnecessary sun damage this summer. We hope you incorporate these few simple tips, and we encourage you to call for an office consultation and an in-depth conversation and skin analysis.

  • ROAD TRIP!: Summertime is coming, and it is still the most popular time for a road trip. With “stay-cations” becoming ever more popular, many people will be on the road this summer. But you may not know that the sun can find you even with the windows rolled up – you can still be exposed to harmful UV rays. Be sure you use a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on your road trip to reduce your sun exposure.
  • SO BRIGHT YOU GOTTA WEAR SHADES: Sunglasses are a must during the height of spring and summer. Wearing sunglasses reduces the strain put on your eyes due to the intense light, but they also preserve your appearance by protecting the delicate skin around your eyes. The eyes are one of the most commonly treated areas in plastic surgery when it comes to facial rejuvenation. Eyelid surgery and facelift procedures help reduce sagging and fine lines. Wearing sunglasses during the summer can help preserve the youthful glow of your eyes for as long as possible.
  • DON’T SWEAT IT: When the weather is cooler, moisturizers help you combat the dryness of the season and promote healthy skin. When the weather gets hotter, the opposite is true. Your skin can become overloaded with sweat, leading to a build-up of natural oils in your skin. This can lead to blemishes and other skin issues.
Washing your face regularly during the spring and summer (2-3 times a day) can be a great way to prevent these build-ups. You will still want to use a sunblock with a moisturizer to protect your skin, but being conscientious about cleansing your face will help prevent buildup. If you find that your skin needs a deep cleanse or needs more than cleanser, consider microdermabrasion or a chemical peel to help remove the damaged skin layers and reveal the healthy skin beneath.

Proper protection and skin care is always important, but it’s a top priority during the peak months of summer. Taking the right steps to care for your skin will help you stay looking your best well into your twilight years. And remember, Pinsky Plastic Surgery is always here to help if your skin needs a little boost to be beautiful!
