The Popularity of Cosmetic Surgery Continues to Rise

The plastic surgery industry has been an expanding and innovative industry for decades. 2012 saw a record number of patients seeking out cosmetic surgery to treat a variety of aesthetic needs. With more than 14.6 million cosmetic treatments performed in 2012 alone, the field of plastic surgery saw a 5% increase since 2011. All in all, 2012 was a banner year for cosmetic surgeons, with a 6% increase in minimally invasive procedures.

2012 was the year of the aging Baby Boomer patient, as more and more people visited their plastic surgeon for both surgical and non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures. Botox injections were by far the most sought out cosmetic treatment in 2012, totaling more than 6.1 million treatments. That is an 8% growth from the previous year. Facial filler injections were close behind. Products like Restylane and Juvederm saw a growth of 5%, moving to nearly 2 million treatments. Laser skin resurfacing treatments were also among the most popular non-invasive facial rejuvenation treatments, growing 6% to nearly 2.2 million treatments.

Surgical facial rejuvenation treatments were on the rise in 2012 as well. Face lift surgeries saw a growth of 6%, eyelid lift surgery was up 4%, and cheek implants to add volume to aging cheeks were also up 6%.

As the Baby Boomer generation grows older and cosmetic treatments continue to improve and gain mainstream acceptance, more people are seeking out methods of maintaining their youth. People are staying active longer than ever before, and in many cases remain in the workplace much longer than people did even a decade ago. The need to have their outer appearance match their youthful inner selves is driving this shift in cosmetic treatment popularity.
