At the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), fat was a big topic (pun intended!). In fact, you might say that for 2013, fat is where it’s at! Huge progress has been made in fat removal, fat purification, and the use of fat in cosmetic treatments. Many plastic surgeons believe fat is quickly becoming the wave of the future with lots of exciting new options for its use. Some of the most common uses for new fat based procedures include:

• BREAST AUGMENTATION: As breast augmentations continue to be the most popular plastic surgery procedure, it is no wonder that so many surgeons looking for ways to improve on the popular procedure. Using fat as filler is quickly becoming another option for women in addition to the option of saline or silicone breast implants. While fat transfer breast augmentation has some limitations regarding the size increase and added volume, one thing is for certain: the use of fat in breast augmentation surgery is very safe. Many doctors are using fat transfer to further improve the results of breast implants by combining the two techniques together.
• FACELIFT SURGERY: Another popular procedure that uses fillers to add volume is the facelift. In certain procedures fat can be used as natural filler and an alternative to other products (like Juvederm). Research is still being done to improve the long-term results of fat injections and make them more efficient; but the potential is there.

These procedures may still be in the early stages of adoption, but peeking at the future of cosmetic surgery is exciting; knowing there are “great expectations” ahead for all of us.
