Communication is the Key

Any cosmetic surgery procedure is a big decision to consider. The key to making an informed decision is the consultation with your board-certified plastic surgeon. This is your opportunity to speak openly about your goals, your medical history, and ask questions regarding the upcoming procedure. It is not a time to be shy. When it comes to your body, you can never be too careful. Knowing all of this, you would be surprised how many people find it difficult to speak up when it comes to their doctors.

Studies show that even the most well educated, articulate people are hesitant to speak freely with their doctors. Some of the most common reasons are:

  • NERVOUSNESS: Patients may fear a strain on their relationship with their doctor if they question any recommendations. In actuality, the opposite is true. By gaining a better understanding of the recommendations, and participating, a patient can strengthen the doctor/patient relationship. The best possible results come from a patient and doctor who work as a team.
  • DOCTOR KNOWS BEST: While your surgeon should be a highly-trained, board-certified professional, there are many options available for each procedure and you are the only person who can truly make the decision about what is right for you! Your doctor will present you with options that allow you to make the best, most informed decision. An open, honest exchange of information will also help ensure the best possible results for your cosmetic procedure.
  • TIME CONTRAINTS: Another big factor that contributes to patients not feeling able to speak up is time. People can feel awkward if they feel as though they are taking too much of a doctor’s time. Ultimately your doctor is going to want to make sure you have all the information you need to move forward with your procedure. Everyone makes their decisions differently and it is not uncommon for a patient to have more than one consultation with us to finalize the details of their procedure.

If you are one of the many patients who find themselves hesitant to speak up during your consultation, remember, it is YOUR consultation! As plastic surgeons, we are here to help you achieve your goals and the best way to do that is through open communication. If you feel as though you cannot speak freely with your plastic surgeon, it is time to find a new one!
