Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day

This past October brought to the world the first ever BRA (breast reconstruction awareness) Day. This day was designed to educate women about options after mastectomy. BRA Day was created in response to a recent statistic that revealed 7 out of 10 women are unaware of their options for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. In an already difficult time, a lack of information about reconstructive options can make an already trying time nearly unbearable.

BRA Day was the brainchild of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Plastic Surgery Foundation. Word quickly spread and more than 100 BRA Day events were scheduled nationwide, ranging from North Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio, and more. To truly draw attention to BRA Day USA, and this important issue, the ASPS and Plastic Surgery Foundation chose New Orleans as the location to host their centerpiece event.

The organization secured Singer/Songwriter Jewel as their national spokesperson. She even headlined a concert, sharing personal stories throughout the evening, to help raise money to support the cause. To show special support for the project, Jewel wrote a special song titled “Flower”. All proceeds from the purchase of that song are also used to support BRA Day USA and the message of breast reconstruction education.

BRA Day USA was such a monumental success, that the third Wednesday of October will now be known as BRA Day USA, with many more special and informative events to come each year. The goal: that every woman who endures the personal trial of a bout with breast cancer knows her reconstructive options from the moment she is diagnosed. The 7 out of 10 women who are uninformed is a statistic that is unacceptable to plastic surgeons.

The BRA Day movement will continue to grow, and as a way to keep the public informed on the various events, as well as provide links to find other information regarding breast reconstruction surgery, they have launched their own website. The site, www.BraDayUSA.org has pictures, videos, event listings, and even the exclusive Jewel song “Flower” available to be downloaded; everything you need to support the breast reconstruction cause.

At Pinsky Plastic Surgery, we support all the efforts made by The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and BRA Day USA.
