Palm Beach Plastic Surgeon On Liposuction Results and Recovery Expectations
Dr. Mark Pinsky details what patients can often expect from one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in America.
West Palm Beach, FL – According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, liposuction was the most popular surgical cosmetic enhancement treatment in 2014, with nearly 342,500 procedures performed. Designed to remove pockets of excess fat from virtually any body area, liposuction has helped millions of people eliminate localized fat deposits that often prove resistant to diet and exercise. Palm Beach plastic surgeon Mark Pinsky, MD says liposuction has seen many advances over the years, with new technologies and surgical techniques making the procedure easier to perform and more comfortable and effective for patients. They say some of the most common questions he gets from individuals considering liposuction involve the exact nature of the potential results and what to expect during recovery – two issues patients should have a clear idea about before undergoing the procedure.
Liposuction utilizes long, thin rods called cannulas to gently suction out and remove excess fat cells from targeted areas of the body. The procedure can be performed in a number of ways, which include the use of ultrasonic waves or lasers to liquefy or dissolve the fat just before removal, making it easier to extract. Dr. Pinsky says the incisions for the procedure can be very small, allowing for any residual scarring to be barely noticeable. They note that patients can typically expect a more contoured appearance, better definition, and long-term results in the treatment areas. Patients often experience results that are immediately noticeable; however, he says it can sometimes take several weeks or months for swelling to completely dissipate and yield the full effects of the procedure. Dr. Pinsky says liposuction is not designed to help patients lose large amounts of weight, but it can be very effective for patients who are at or near their ideal weight and have areas of localized fat they can’t get rid of by traditional means.
The Palm Beach plastic surgeon says the costs of liposuction and details of recovery is largely dependent on each individual case, since the size of the treatment area and the amount of fat to be removed are two of the many factors that go into the price of treatment and the downtime necessary after liposuction. He notes that patients will likely experience some bruising and swelling in the treatment area and will need to wear a compression garment for a short period following liposuction; however, most patients are able to return to normal daily activities within a few days. There is also usually some temporary numbness in the incision areas after liposuction, and patients are advised to avoid strenuous activity for at least three weeks to give the treatment area time to properly heal.
Dr. Pinsky says one of the most important things people who are considering liposuction can do is to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon. He notes that experienced plastic surgeons often utilize advanced technologies and have been performing body contouring procedures for many years, helping to increase the chances of a smooth treatment and results that meet expectations. He says prospective patients should never be afraid to ask questions and to have every one of their concerns addressed in the initial consultation.
