Surgical vs. Non-Surgical Double Chin Reduction

While facial liposuction and neck lift procedures remain the most effective ways to reduce the prominence of a double chin, we also offer non-surgical solutions—CoolMini™ and KYBELLA^®—which can diminish excess fat beneath the chin. While CoolMini and KYBELLA use different methods to destroy fat cells, each can be used to enhance the profile and recontour the neckline without the need for surgery or downtime.

When patients come to Dr. Pinsky with concerns about a double chin, he examines the area to determine which surgical or non-surgical method could be most effective. Not all patients are candidates for surgery, which can immediately rule out liposuction or a neck lift as a viable means for achieving their goals. These two surgical techniques are the gold standard of chin and neck contouring, and offer the most immediate and customized results when compared to CoolMini and KYBELLA. Of these options, only a neck lift can reduce fullness beneath the chin that is caused by a combination of inelastic skin and excess fat.

Both FDA-approved CoolMini and KYBELLA are most effective when performed on patients who have a mild to moderate degree of localized fat beneath the chin and possess good skin elasticity. While CoolMini is completely non-invasive and utilizes cold temperatures to freeze and destroy fat cells through skin contact (via the CoolSculpting^® system), KYBELLA must be injected into the tissue to break down fat cells. In both instances, natural processes within the body carry away the damaged fat cells and expel them from the body. The full results of each treatment take time to become completely realized as the fat reduction process is not entirely immediate. For optimal results, more than one CoolMini or KYBELLA treatment may need to be performed.
