Smooth Tucks vs. Tummy Tucks

Weight loss challenges may not affect everyone – but it sure seems like they do! Millions would like to change their bodies quickly AND dramatically, but many may not need or want a traditional tummy tuck. For those patients, an alternative is now available: the Smooth Tuck. This procedure is less invasive than a full tummy tuck surgery, focusing more on fat removal and skin tightening and less on addressing muscle laxity. Smooth tucks can result in a faster recovery, targeted results, and less scarring. Additionally, patients often return to daily activities more quickly and with less discomfort.

Tummy tucks primarily target loose muscle and skin. They wsmooth-tuck-vs-tummy-tuck-300x229ere never intended for radical weight loss. Traditionally, only a half-liter or less of fat is removed over the course of the operation. With a traditional tummy tuck an incision is made at the base of the abdomen, allowing Dr. Pinsky to access the underlying muscles. Muscles are often stitched together to create a tighter, flatter belly. The work involved in tightening the muscles is why recovery times may be extended, creating a delay in return to normal routines. In some cases he may also reposition the belly button using small external incisions.

A Smooth Tuck primarily targets fat – with some tightening of skin, too. A Smooth Tuck begins with extensive liposuction around the belly and upper thighs – on average, 2 to 3 liters of fat are removed. A small abdominal incision is then created to tighten any loose abdominal skin. Belly button repositioning is commonly done internally to reduce scarring. Most patients can resume some physical activity within a week and full exercise in two weeks since muscles are not really affected. In addition, the resulting abdominal scar may be smaller and easier to hide.

Smooth Tucks generally take around two hours to complete. This procedure can dramatically reshape the abdomen without the long recovery time and discomfort associated with a traditional tummy tuck. Essentially, the new “Smooth Tuck” is a combination of liposuction and an abbreviated tummy tuck.
